Giant Shield Bug (Asiarcha angulosa, Tessaratomidae)

This is the mightiest and most vivid Tessaratomid Shield Bug I have come across thus far. Rectangular in shape and measuring 30mmX15mm.

Tessaratomids resemble large stink bugs (family Pentatomidae) and are sometimes quite colourful as are their nymphal forms, although these rarely resemble the adult. (See a previous post, Tessaratomid Nymphs) Larger species are known informally as giant shield bugs, giant stink bugs, or inflated stink bugs. All tessaratomids are phytophagous (plant feeders) using a piercing/sucking mouthpart.

My image were used on the ‘Illustrated catalog of TESSARATOMIDAE’ website for this species (see images for screenshot). See full page HERE.

Lychee Shield Bug (Chrysocoris stolii, Scutelleridae)

Scutelleridae is a family of true bugs. They are commonly known as jewel bugs or metallic shield bugs due to their often brilliant coloration. They are also known as shield-backed bugs due to the enlargement of the last section of their thorax into a continuous shield over the abdomen and wings. This latter characteristic distinguishes them from most other Hemipteran bug families, and may lead to misidentification as a beetle rather than a bug. These insects feed on plant juices from a variety of different species, including some commercial crops. Closely related to stink bugs, they may also produce an offensive odour when disturbed.

coolbugsbug of the day on Flickr. The problem with photographing longhorned beetles is that you get so distracted trying to squish those long, beautiful antennae into the shot, that you end up missing a lot of the detail that ends up in a typical macro shot. So here’s a bit of a closer look at that Northeastern sawyer I photographed last summer. Click through to the original size to enjoy it in its maximum-pixeled glory!

The insect in this picture is one of the tiniest things I’ve ever seen without magnification.  It was about 1 millimeter long, and just looked like a speck moving across the sandstone.  When I looked through my camera I saw its funny face.

Thanks to ezbugz and greenstarz for identifying the mini-mystery as a bark louse.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before.

Patiently waiting for the slow ones…..waiting…..waiting…..

Newly hatched Shield Bug nymphs (Pentatomoidea) gather around their recently vacated eggs as if waiting for their two remaining siblings to emerge. This is a frequently observed phenomenon amongst these Pentatomids. See similar instances HERE and HERE.

coolbugsbug of the day on Flickr. It’s been a while since I posted a mantidfly shot, right? Maybe not that long, but who cares because mantidflies are awesome! This is an overhead view of a wasp mantidfly, Climaciella brunnea, that showed up at my moth light last July.

sinobugWasp Moth (Amata sp., Arctiidae) Wasps have a powerful defense mechanism - the painful sting. And generally, wasps are not subject to predation. Consequently they have become the model of mimicry for many insects, including these moths. (background is an overcast sky). Pu’er, Yunnan, China. See more Chinese moths on my Flickr site HERE…..
